History of Millearne

The old mansion house is said to have been built for Sir John George Drummond, the younger brother of the Laird of Blair Drummond, from 1821 onwards. The Tudor gothic style of Millearne has been attributed to Edinburgh architects, R & R Dickson. John George Home Drummond loved his home and lived there for the remainder of his life until his death. Although it reminded in his family after his death, it was rented out for the next 30 years.

In 1881 it became the home of Caroline Stirling Home Drummond Moray, the daughter of the Laird of Abercairny and Blair Drummond, after she married Arthur Forbes, and they assumed the name Drummond Forbes. After Arthur died, Caroline re married to a Louis Grimond Macintyre and they took up residence at Millearne until she died in 1962. Her family continued to live at Millearne, although the mansion house was not an easy house to live in with five staircases, a mishmash of roofs, chimney styles, different ceiling heights, and disparity in the sizes of the windows. It became impossible to keep in good repair and was demolished in 1969 and replaced with a 1970’s home. Not all the original estate buildings were demolished however, and the Stable Block, Walled Garden with Formal Terraced Garden, South Gate and Monument still survive to this day.

The 1970’s style home was in turn demolished in 2006 replaced with the Georgian style home the family live in today.
